In common with most British waters the run of salmon has declined over the last few decades. The river Usk though has fared better than most and for the last few years the salmon catch has exceeded that of the mighty Wye and tops other Welsh rivers.

The season is slow to start in March but this is the time when the large fish enter the river. Migration increases as spring progresses.and grilse move into the river in early summer. In recent years the best of the salmon fishing has been at the end of the season due mainly to low water levels in the summer. This does not stop the seatrout from moving upstream and it is always worth trying an appropriate fly as darkness falls.

All salmon must be returned to the river unharmed before June 16th and fly only is the rule until 1st June. Standard salmon flies are successful here but the local favourite is the usk grub. The favourite spinner nowadays is the flying C but all standard patterns will take fish.

Early in the season, when fishing for trout or salmon, it is not unusual to hook migratory shad. These protected fish must be treated with great care and returned swiftly to the river.

Trout and salmon rights are split between private owners and fishing clubs. There are many stretches open to the visitor. For local information contact Mrs Jean Williams (see below), who can arrange fishing., advise on water conditions, and supply artificial flies to suit the time of the year at modest prices.

Do you enjoy upstream fishing for wild brown trout?

In the north west corner of Spain just north of Portugal is a green moist area stuffed full of chalk stream-like rivers with a good head of wild brown trout. The fishing is not easy as the banks are heavily bushed over and wading is the order of the day. Dry flies, nymphs and beetles or upstream wet flies are the favourites but if, like me, you enjoy this type of jiggery-pockery fly fishing it is very rewarding..

Fly Fishing Galicia (www.flyfishinggalicia.co.uk) is run by a British husband and wife team. They offer a 4 day break which includes half board accommodation, transfers from the airport, fishing license, fishing permits and fully guided and transported fishing with Kevin who will go to endless trouble to make sure you enjoy yourself. Louise provides the food and makes sure that you get what you like. Local dishes are her speciality.

The cost of this is remarkably low. The nearest airport is Santiago da Compostella and is served by Ryanair at very modest prices.

I sampled this treat in the spring last year and couldn't wait to get back, this time in the last week of the season. If you would like more information that is not on the website send me an e-mail (mike@wagtailusk.force9.co.uk)
