The river Usk has a well-deserved reputation as a trout and salmon river.
It is one of those rare rivers that are able to support a good population
of both resident and migratory fish. It has been long famed for the richness
of its fly life though in recent years it has suffered, in common with most
British rivers, from modern farming practices. Nevertheless it is a fine river
still containing a good head of fish and a wide range of insect species.
Trout up to 3 lbs or even more are caught each year and a year rarely goes
by without a 30lb salmon being landed. The season for trout is 3rd March to
30th September and for salmon 3rd March to 17th October.
